stop my cat from going missing

Is there anything I can do to stop my cat from going missing?

A big concern for cat owners is that one day their cat will go missing. A missing cat is a relatively common thing to see, particularly as cats are prone to wandering away from their home area. The only sure-fire way of stopping your cat from going missing is to keep it inside all of the time, but this isn’t something that owners will want to do, and isn’t really particularly kind to your cat if they like to be outside. So, with this in mind, we have put together some top tips on how you can make it less likely that your cat will go missing.

Microchipping

Microchipping is one of the best things that you can do if you are concerned that your cat may go missing. The process is pain free and permanent and will be carried out by your vet. They will insert a chip which is the size of a grain of rice, underneath the skin on the neck of your cat. This chip contains all of your details including your address and phone number, which means that when it is scanned, it will help the vets to contact you.

A reflective collar with a tag

Another simple idea is to buy your cat a collar with a tag. The best type of collar to opt for is a reflective, breakaway one. Not only will this be safer for the cat, particularly if they are prone to climbing trees, but the reflective nature will show up on the roads at night, cutting down their chances of being hit by a car. Keeping them in at night or during times of high stress

Cats are much more likely to go missing at night, particularly during Bonfire Night, Christmas and  New Year when people use fireworks. This means, if you can, that you should get your cat into the habit of staying in at night, particularly during these times.

Cat proofing your garden

Another way to keep your cat safe is to cat proof your garden. Make sure that they have plenty of space so that they can explore and satisfy their natural curiosity. As well as that they won’t be tempted into straying a little further afield.

Tracking devices

In these modern times, it makes sense that there are more and more technological advancements when it comes to owning pets. This has meant that there are a number of tracking devices on the market that you can use to keep an eye on your cat whilst they are out and about. Useful if they frequently do a disappearing act.
