What are the signs of cat urinary issues?

As cat owners, one thing that we hope for our cats is that they are going to be in the best health possible. This means that we need to keep a close eye on some of their behaviours, and look out for signs that they are not feeling themselves. In this post we take a look at cat urinary issues.
One of the most common issues that can crop up with your cat is urinary issues. Not only are these common, but if you don’t pick them up then you might cause them some long term and even fatal issues.
The trouble with cats and illness
Whereas a dog may make it obvious that they are not feeling well. Cats are a little more inclined to hide away any illnesses, injuries or problems that they have. Whilst this is pretty impressive, this may make it harder for cat owners to pick up when there is an issue. This is particularly true for those with urinary issues as these are much easier to hide away.
The signs that your cat may be in pain from urinary issues
Whilst it may be hard to pick up when your cat has a urinary issue, that doesn’t mean that it is impossible. There are a variety of signs that you can pick up on that they are in pain and that they are struggling with urination, they can be relatively subtle, which means that you are going to have to play close attention to your cat and their behaviour.
Some of the top signs that there is an issue include:
- Laying in a different area or room that they normally do
- Changes to their appetite. This could be in the form of an increased hunger or a decreased hunger
- Increased drinking
- Increased need to urinate
- Urinating outside of the litter box which is out of the ordinary
- Frequent trips to the litter tray that are short
- Straining to urinate or looking uncomfortable whilst they do it
- The presence of blood in the urine
- A change in the colour or odour the urine
This may seem like a lot of different things to look out for, but they are often things that are easy to pick up on. The thing to remember when it comes to your cat is that they are a creature of habit and if they are doing anything that is out of the ordinary then you might want to make an appointment with the vet.
Much like any other illness, when your cat has a urinary issue, the sooner that you can pick up on the problem, then the sooner you can fix it. Rather than waiting to see how it progresses, make an appointment nice and early, it may turn out not to be anything. But at least you have the peace of mind that everything is okay.
