Why it makes sense to re-home a cat rather than buy a kitten

If you are looking for a new cat for your home, then chances are that you will start your search by looking for kittens for sale in your local area. We all love the idea of having a little kitten bounding around our homes, playing and generally being a cute little bundle of fluff. But we think that there might be a better idea.

Rather than heading out to buy a kitten, why not think about re-homing a cat that is currently living in a rescue setting. Sure, they might not have the cute factor that younger kitties do, but there are plenty of great reasons why you should consider rescuing a cat.

You have the chance to save them!

There is no better feeling than knowing that you have taken a cat away from the shelter and instead given them a space in your home. One thing that many people say about cats is that they are not particularly good at showing affection and appreciation. But every time you look in the eyes of the rescue cat in your home, you will know that they are grateful for everything that you have done for them.

They will be spayed or neutered and have all their health checks

One of the worries that you will have when you get a new kitten is whether or not they are in the best health. This can always be a worry and not only this, but you will also need to think about spaying or neutering your new pet too to stop any breeding. When you get a cat from a rescue centre, not only will they already be spayed or neutered but they will be checked over to make sure that they don’t have any conditions that can have an effect on their health, or that will require treatment.

They don’t cost the Earth

If you are thinking about getting a kitten, then chances are that you have seen just how much money they can be sold for. The trouble is, whilst people make that initial investment, they soon realise that cats are not quite as easy as they may have hoped and they end up heading for the shelter. Whilst many shelters may have a charge for adopting a pet from them, this is likely to be minimal and you know that every penny that you are paying them is going towards helping them to rescue new cats.

You have a fully trained cat

Whilst having a kitten can be great fun, it can also be a little on the frustrating side. They will need litter training and also teaching how not to cause too much chaos in your home. When you adopt an older cat, they will already be through that rather irritating kitten stage and will be ready to become a part of your family.

As you can see, there are a number of reasons why it makes sense to adopt rather than buy a cat. Why not take a look at the local rescue centres close to you and see if you can find the ideal fit for your family?
