How to keep your kitty safe on Bonfire Night

Remember, Remember the 5th of November; how to keep your kitty safe on Bonfire Night

There is something pretty awesome about the Autumn months. Not only is it Halloween, which is a time when it is acceptable for adults to eat their body weight in sweets, but it is also Bonfire night too. This celebration dates back to Guy Fawkes and his plan to blow up the House of Parliament.

It is usually celebrated with bonfires and plenty of fireworks. Which is great for us humans, but not so much for our pets.

Here at Simply Catnip we know that in order to keep our kitties safe during Bonfire Night there are few steps that we can all take. But what are they and how do they help?

Try to leave them be

If your cat is particularly spooked during fireworks, then it is a good idea to leave them be if they are indoors. Try not to coax them out if they hide under furniture or on top of cupboards. It is likely that they are there because it makes them feel safe.

Keep them in

This is one of the biggest tips. It is a good idea to keep your cat in during Bonfire Night. They might not like the idea, but locking the cat flap and shutting all escape routes for one evening is a great way to keep them safe and calm.

Use a plug in

You can buy a variety of pheromone based diffusers for your cat that you plug in at home. These are known to reduce feelings of anxiety and help them to feel more secure. In order to get the best results, it is a good idea to plug these 48 hours before you need your cat to be calm.

Clean out their litter tray

If you are planning on keeping your cat inside for Bonfire night then you are going to need to make sure that their litter tray is spotlessly clean. Cats, by their very nature, do not like going to toilet in a dirty litter tray, and if they cannot go outside then they may find somewhere else to go!

Try and avoid going out

This isn’t always possible, but if you can, then it is a good idea to stay in with your cats during the fireworks. This will not only allow you to keep an eye on them, but also give them a sense of security and safety knowing that you are there!

If your kitty is well behaved during the fireworks, then why not treat them to a new toy from our range? With so much to choose from you will be sure to find the ideal treat to reward them with.
